Baruch’s Historic Hub, the Lawrence N. Field Building, Enters Phase 2 of Multiyear Renovation

Dear Baruch College Community,

It is our pleasure to announce that the much-anticipated Phase 2 of the renovation and modernization of Baruch’s historic Lawrence N. Field Building at 17 Lexington Avenue (aka 17 Lex) is scheduled to start this month. This work is being managed by CUNY and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, in coordination with the College’s Office of Campus Facilities and Operations.

The Field Building, which opened in 1929, is the historical heart of the much-expanded Baruch College campus. In the College’s early days, 17 Lex housed all academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. The current multiphase renovation, which began in 2017, will ensure that this nearly-century-old building is well-equipped to serve the needs of generations of Baruchians.

Benefiting Our Community: Phase 2 Highlights

The second phase of the renovation project is expected to include the following improvements and preparations:

  * Completion of 1st-floor renovations with a new multipurpose student lounge, new ADA-compliant restrooms, and improved access to 23rd Street
  * Outfitting of Mason Hall, Baruch’s large auditorium-style venue, with an improved lobby and new ADA-compliant elevator to enable access to the stage and balcony areas
  * Leveling off the mezzanines on the 6th and 7th floors to create contiguous floorplates for the construction of future classrooms and offices

What to Expect During the Renovation

  * Within the next three weeks, the construction area will be isolated from the public with dustproof barriers. These areas will be closed to all students, faculty, and staff for the project's duration, which is expected to last approximately two years.
  * All contractors will enter the building through the 23rd Street entrance, which will be closed to the public.
  * Wayfinding signage will be posted indicating the emergency route. If you have questions about the path of egress, please refer them to the Public Safety officer on duty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  * During construction, how will noise and dust be mitigated?
Sealed solid-wall construction with insulation will separate the public from construction activities. Heavy demolition and noise-generating activities will be scheduled from 11 pm to 7 am. Classrooms close to work area(s) have been relocated to upper floors.
  *
What will happen to the restrooms on the 1st floor?

During the renovation, the restrooms on the 1st floor will be unavailable. Please use the 2nd-floor restrooms instead. All other restrooms located on the 3rd through 5th and on the 8th through 16th floors will remain operational.

  *   Where can I report a problem?
