Celebrating Black History at Baruch

Dear Baruch Community,

In recognition of Black History Month, Baruch College is proud to celebrate and reflect on the significant ways in which people of the African Diaspora have shaped global history, including the indelible and important impact of Black Americans on the history of the United States—its people, achievements, and culture.

The history of Baruch begins with Black excellence. The first president of the College was Dr. Robert C. Weaver, who, as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Lyndon B. Johnson, had been the highest-ranking African American working in government at the time. That legacy drives Baruch’s commitment to celebrating and advocating for the diversity that informs and enriches the world today.

Family, Representation, and Resilience

This year, the Office of Student Life (OSL), the Department of Black and Latino Studies (BLS), and a planning committee of students, staff, and faculty volunteers from across the College came together to design a robust series of educational events, discussions, celebrations, and multimedia features under a unifying theme: Family, Representation, and Resilience. The festivities kick off next Tuesday, Feb. 2, with a special opening ceremony.

Other highlights include a virtual CUNY-wide celebration, organized by Baruch College, to connect students across the University; discussions on Black generational wealth and entrepreneurship; conversations with alumni; and opportunities for career development with a Black business expo and other programming sponsored by the Starr Career Development Center.

For a listing of events and Zoom details, please visit OSL’s Black History Month webpage <https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=hC1_ErmTiEe7VFpEG-47MA&ref_id=me3bx4xInkOK483hY4yeTw> .

Celebrating 50 Years of Black and Latino Studies at Baruch

The College is also proud to be celebrating the legacy of Black and Latino Studies at Baruch—now a half-century strong. In 1971 an interracial coalition of students, faculty, and staff came together to organize the College’s Department of Black and Latino Studies (BLS). To commemorate department’s 50th year, BLS has developed a slate of special programming and events that both chart the history and plot the future of BLS at Baruch.

On Thursday, Feb. 4, President S. David Wu will narrate the first video in a series of short films that highlight Black history and Black voices at Baruch. President Wu will describe the legacy of the College’s inaugural president, Dr. Robert C. Weaver. Other digital features will highlight reflections from students, faculty, and staff exploring different aspects of global Black histories with insights on art, music, feminism, food, and politics. Shared on social media and the BLS community page <https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=0JQ0rnyfdkG6vhWePtFU5Q&ref_id=me3bx4xInkOK483hY4yeTw> , posts will include links to resources where viewers can learn more about engaging with their communities on these critical topics.

In a special event for students interested in pursuing BLS at Baruch, the department is holding a virtual open house—Celebrating 50 Years of BLS@Baruch—to share updates on the efforts to establish a BLS major and offer advice for those seeking to pursue an ad-hoc major in BLS at this time. The event will be held Thursday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 2 pm. Please register here <https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=Bp4Sk9JN6kGV_OIZFF3SHA&ref_id=me3bx4xInkOK483hY4yeTw> .

Celebrating Safely Is Our Primary Concern

As Baruch continues to learn and socialize in the online campus environment through the Spring 2021 semester, all events will be held in virtual formats.

Stay safe and looking forward to the Baruch community’s participation in Black History Month 2021!
