Continued Efforts to Enhance Student Spaces: “Pop-Up” Area in the Former Bookstore

Dear Baruch Community,

As our community returns to campus following spring break, I am pleased to remind all Bearcats that our newest student space is now available for studying, relaxing, and socializing. This “pop-up” student area is conveniently located in the former Barnes & Noble bookstore on the first floor of the Newman Vertical Campus (NVC), open from 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 5 pm on Friday. The pop-up space is temporary, as the College embarks on a comprehensive project to convert the bookstore space into a Student Success Center—including the permanent home of the Baruch One Stop Shop (the BOSS), student services offices, student workstations, as well as a new lounge space for students to study, read, socialize, and engage.

New York City is Baruch’s extended campus with unparalleled access to global centers for business, the arts, government, philanthropy, and international affairs. Conversely, our location presents us with systemic space challenges that are inherent to all urban campuses. The College’s leadership team and I recognize that Baruch has very limited meeting and activity space—to be shared by over 100 student clubs and organizations—and it is our ongoing quest to envision, find, and create more spaces for our growing and active student population.

The new pop-up reflects a creative approach to identifying and repurposing College spaces to maximize Baruch’s community areas. Over the past few years, the College worked with multiple stakeholders and partners to transform a busy city street into the lovely Clivner=Field Plaza, an outdoor extension of our campus, and space was identified and renovated in the historic post office building on East 24th Street to create the Allen G. and Mary E. Aaronson Student Center<https://studentaffairs.baruch.cuny.edu/studentlife/aaronson-student-center/>, a welcoming and spacious area for the student community. We continuously have an eye on reimagining space, despite constraints, and look forward to improvements to the Lawrence and Eris Field Building at 17 Lex, including a new student lounge. There are also numerous areas designated for studying and taking online exams<https://baruch.cuny.edu/covid19/student-study-spaces-places-to-take-online-classes/> across campus. In this spirit, we will continue to address these space constraints to create additional and improved student spaces. It will take time, and we will need your patience and support.

I am pleased that we have made the former bookstore space available for our students, and I look forward to dropping by and seeing you there.

Sincerely,

S. David Wu

President, Baruch College
