How You Can Help: Disaster Relief Initiatives in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Baruch College has joined forces with the CUNY Coalition for the Recovery of Puerto Rico, as well as with New York City and State, to offer relief and assistance to the people of Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands that were devastated by the recent hurricanes. This disaster has special meaning for Baruch, because so many of our community members trace their heritage to the Caribbean and have family and friends directly impacted by this disaster.

Donating Supplies

Please consider supporting much-needed efforts by dropping off such supplies as batteries, lanterns, and baby-care items at these Baruch locations:

· Office of Student Life

Newman Vertical Campus, Room 210

· Office of the Dean of Students

Newman Vertical Campus, Room 3-175

These campus locations are available now and will be collecting donations through Tuesday, Oct. 31.

In addition, CUNY has established drop-off stations throughout the city:

· Manhattan: Jacob K. Javits Center, 655 West 34th Street

· Brooklyn: Shirley A. Chisholm State Office Building, 55 Hanson Place

· Queens: Jamaica Street Armory, 93-05 168th Street

· Bronx: Robert Clemente State Park, 301 West Tremont Avenue and the Department of Motor Vehicles, 696 East Fordham Road

Long-Term Efforts Throughout Baruch and CUNY

Spearheading university-wide efforts is the CUNY Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro), housed at Hunter College. It is launching Rebuild Puerto Rico<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=ilW_HiLLSUWJcG-9rxf--g&ref_id=aGJZmlt2AkGheqEe10ATPg>, a long-term initiative that includes a clearinghouse of information and volunteers to run it, with sections for news, policies, contributions, and more. While there is no single program within CUNY focused on assisting the other affected islands, there are several external organizations that are doing so.

You may also support the rebuilding efforts by volunteering at or contributing to:

· Catholic Charities<file:///C:\Users\MWallerstein\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary%20Internet%20Files\Content.Outlook\KPIZ3BKA\catholiccharities.org>

· Salvation Army<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=bsl6ra-D3UGUG1Dy-yjhLQ&ref_id=aGJZmlt2AkGheqEe10ATPg>

Baruch College’s Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Assembly have formed an ad hoc Disaster Relief Committee to address the long-term support for those affected by the hurricanes, earthquakes, and other disasters. The committee will consist of students, faculty, and staff and is aiming to plan fundraising events and spearhead support initiatives throughout the rest of the academic year. If you are interested in participating in this committee, please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> with the subject line “Disaster Relief Committee” and be sure to include your contact information.

Our thoughts and prayers are with friends, colleagues, and the people of Puerto Rico and the other affected Caribbean islands. Let us do all we can to assist them at this time.

Sincerely,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein

President, Baruch College
