The Passing of William Newman ('47)

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I write to share the sad news that William Newman, class of 1947, who was among Baruch College's most significant donors, passed away over the weekend. He was 92.

[BNewman1997 (002)]As you know, several buildings, important facilities and programs, plus a major faculty position bear the Newman name. They include the William and Anita Newman Vertical Campus (NVC), the William and Anita Newman Library, the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute (on 22nd Street), the William Newman Department of Real Estate, and the William and Anita Newman Conference Center in the Information and Technology Building, as well as the William Newman Chair in Real Estate Finance and the William Newman Directorship of the Sandra Kahn Wasserman Jewish Studies Center.

[IMG_0573]After studying as an accountant at Baruch and earning his CPA, Bill joined his father's accounting firm where he developed a specialty in real estate investment. By 1972, he transformed his father's firm into New Plan Excel Realty Trust, Inc. Serving as CEO and chairman, he built the company into one of the nation's largest real estate corporations focused on community neighborhood shopping centers. In addition to supporting Baruch with his generous philanthropy, he was also very giving of his time and insights. As recently as January 2018, as shown in the photo here, Bill participated in a special networking lunch with Zicklin students who were in Florida to attend the International Council of Shopping Centers' Conference.

Bill cared deeply about Baruch and its students, faculty, and staff, and he was extraordinarily generous during his long life. He will be remembered and honored by future generations for his enduring support and his vision for what Baruch could become. Both of these elements-his giving and his outlook-helped propel the College to new heights. We hope to organize a memorial for Bill on campus at a later date and will keep you informed as that takes shape.

With sadness,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, PhD
President
