Restoring the Oyster Ecosystem in Urban Waters

While eastern oysters have been a bedrock of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary, their numbers have continued to decline due to pollution and overharvesting. Chester Zarnoch, PhD, professor of natural sciences at the Weissman School, and a team of researchers are studying how water quality and other conditions in rivers may affect oysters’ reproductive health. Their findings are significant and may help inform restoration efforts for this area in the future.
