Facilities Updates for the NVC and South Campus Buildings

To Students, Faculty, and Staff:

I want to share some campus updates—and thank the Baruch community for your flexibility as the facilities team managed several unrelated issues that impacted operations in several buildings.

Newman Vertical Campus

The Newman Vertical Campus (NVC) was evacuated this afternoon due to a power fluctuation that resulted in a drop in water pressure, air conditioning, and some other system issues. The building was back online for evening classes, although cooling systems are still offline in the three basement levels. We are working to resolve this remaining problem as quickly as possible but in the meantime, BPAC and the Athletic and Recreation Center will remain closed.

Chimney Replacement at the Field Building at 17 Lex

Earlier today, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) confirmed that Phase 1 of the 17 Lex replacement project—the installation of scaffolding, debris netting, and the hoist—is complete. Offices that had been moved to remote operations in 17 Lex, the Administration Building, and Newman Hall may now return campus on Monday, July 10, and resume following regular hybrid schedules. A schedule for Phase 2—the chimney removal and replacement—is being developed and will be communicated as soon as it is available.

Steven L. Newman Hall Air-Conditioning Repairs

With the Phase 1 of the 17 Lex chimney project now complete, DASNY is able to evaluate the rooftop air-conditioning system that cools Newman Hall. We will provide an update once their assessment is complete. Please continue to work with your managers regarding appropriate work accommodations.

Accessing South Campus Buildings

Please note that the alleyway between the south campus buildings will remain closed for the duration of the 17 Lex chimney replacement project. As such, the Administration Building and Newman Hall must continue to be accessed from their respective entrances on East 22nd Street, and the Field Building from its 17 Lexington Avenue entrance. No exceptions will be made.

We very much regret the disruption that facilities issues such as these cause to building occupants and the smooth operation of our campus, and appreciate your continued flexibility and understanding as we respond to complications as they arise.

Sincerely,

Tom Gaimaro

Director, Facilities Planning, Design and Construction
