Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba, Part of Baruch’s
Collaboration with the New York African Diaspora International Film Festival Dear Baruch College Community Members, With
the generous support of the
CUNY Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Baruch College Office of Diversity, Compliance, and Equity Initiatives (ODCEI) has been hosting lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings during the 2022–23
academic year. In particular, Baruch College ODCEI administrators have been using
CUNY
BRESI funds to foster a collaboration with the
New York African Diaspora International Film Festival (NYADIFF)
to conduct virtual and in-person film screenings from the extensive cinema libraries of the
NYADIFF and
Artmattan Films. Each screening also features a conversation with the filmmakers and/or panelists. Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba:
In-Person Screening and Panel Discussion In
celebration of Women’s History Month, our fourth event will be
an in-person screening of the documentary
Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba
on Monday, Mar. 27, at 5 pm in the Engelman Recital Hall, Baruch Performing Arts Center (BPAC). The film
showcases South African musician and human rights activist Miriam Makeba and how she fought racism and poverty while promoting
peace and social justice. After the screening, Yvette Christiansë, PhD, Professor of English and Africana Studies at Barnard College,
will discuss the film with Diarah N'Daw-Spech, MBA, ArtMattan Productions/NYADIFF,
