Newman Vertical Campus Floor Restoration

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

As the campus community prepares for the upcoming semester break, I wanted to provide a timely update on the ongoing terrazzo flooring replacement project taking place in the Newman Vertical Campus (NVC).

This project, which is managed by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), has progressed into an open circulation area of the NVC. To minimize the impact of construction in this high-traffic area, DASNY intends to complete most of the work by the end of December while building use is lower. As much work as possible will take place after business hours and on weekends, and signage will be posted as needed to alter foot-traffic circulation through the area and indicate emergency exits.

What to Expect

  * Escalator out of service from the first to second floors. These two units will be offline through Tuesday, Dec. 20. As an alternative, please use the bank of three elevators on the western side of the building to access all floors, or take the stairs to the second floor to access the bank of six elevators in the center of the building.
  * Potentially altered walkway to the NVC's 24th Street entrance. There will be continuous work in this area through January. A walkable surface will always be provided, with signage as needed to indicate the flow of foot traffic.
  * Construction will move into the B1-level corridor. Work in this area is scheduled to begin this week. Offices will be accessible and a walkable surface will be provided.
  * The three western elevators are scheduled to remain in operation. Signage and updates will be provided if any temporary closures are needed.
  * Athletic and Recreation Center lobby is scheduled to remain open. Signage and updates will be provided if any temporary closures are needed.

While it is challenging to advance this necessary work in an occupied building, Baruch's Department of Buildings and Grounds collaborates with DASNY to keep disruptions to a minimum. Large-scale construction such as this can have unforeseen complications; we will strive to keep the Baruch community informed as best as possible as situations evolve.

Continued thanks for your understanding and patience as we repair and upgrade the NVC.

Sincerely,

Tom Gaimaro
Director, Campus Facilities and Operations
