Journalism Professor’s Research Makes Headlines

In a research study titled Haves and Have Nots: Newspaper Prevalence Among New York City Public High Schools, Geanne Belton, Professor in the Weissman School’s Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions and Director of the High School Journalism Program, uncovered widespread disparities in high school newspaper programs. The study, supported by the Google News Initiative, was widely reported in Chalkbeat, the New York Daily News, and Politico New York, among others. Learn more.

Spotlight: Baruch’s Diversity

  • In a letter to the community, “Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Central Tenets of the Baruch Experience,” President S. David Wu expressed his sadness in the wake of two recent incidents of antisemitism at Baruch and his assertion that everyone is “entitled to learn, work, and thrive in an environment where they can be open about their identities and be treated with respect and civility.”
  • City & State named alumna Vanessa Gibson (MPA ’09), Bronx Borough President, to its Power of Diversity: Women 100 list for 2022, praising her for improving access to healthcare, economic development, and housing.
  • Steven Raga (MPA ’16) became the first Filipino American elected to the NYS Assembly. He will represent Assembly District 30 in Queens.
  • Lina Cruz (’15), who has extensive experience in global sports marketing, was named to New York City’s “40 Latinos Under 40” by Negocios Now. She has a BSPA from the Marxe School and is pursuing an MA at the Weissman School.

 

Community Highlights

  • Double alumnus Charles Dreifus (’66, MBA ’73) and his wife, Madeline, donated
    $5 million to Baruch to establish the College’s largest-ever one-time scholarship gift.
  • Four students pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree were selected as 2022–23 NYC Community Planning Fellows. The program gives fellows first-hand experience working with local community boards. Find out what each student hopes to accomplish.
  • Tina Coco, Pre-law Advisor in the Starr Career Development Center, received the Association for American Law Schools’ 2023 Excellence in Pre-Law Advising Award, which recognizes advisors for overall excellence and for significant efforts to increase diversity in the legal profession. Holiday Food Drive Underway

Baruch’s Office of Public Safety is sponsoring a Holiday Food Drive in partnership with City Harvest’s 40th Annual Daily News Food Drive. Help the 1.5 million New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity this season by donating non-perishable food items through Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Baruch pride trended on social media as hundreds of followers responded to President Wu’s recent blog post, “Appreciate the Complexity Around Us,” in which, inspired by his walks in Baruch’s neighborhood and beyond, the President celebrates the complexity and wonder of the human experience.

 

The post garnered more than 500 likes on Instagram and on LinkedIn such comments as “I treasure my walks on those streets,” “Nothing like being in the heart of New York,“ and “Both my undergraduate and graduate days at Baruch were such great experiences.” In-depth comments and conversations can be found at President Wu’s blog.

FAFSA Resources & News

  • FAFSA: The Guide: Understanding FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Save time, money, and stress.
  • 2023–24 FAFSA Available: Students can file the 2023–24 FAFSA for the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 terms. Obtain or retrieve your Federal Student Aid ID to sign electronically. If you are a dependent, one parent will need an ID to sign as well. Baruch’s Federal Code is 007273. The NYS TAP (NY residents only) code is 1409.

 

Free Legal Consultation with an Immigration Lawyer

Currently registered undergraduates have the opportunity to speak with an immigration lawyer twice a semester. Schedule an appointment on the Student Life website.

 

Support from the Counseling Center

The Baruch College Counseling Center offers free and confidential services. Through culturally responsive and trauma-informed counseling and psychological services, the Counseling Center assists students in achieving their academic and personal goals.

  • Group Counseling: Two sessions of Relationship to Self and Others meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00–2:00 pm on Zoom. To participate on Tuesday, email [log in to unmask]; to participate on Thursday, email [log in to unmask].
  • Black Mental Health Matters Support Sessions foster and support the growth, networking, collaboration, success, and well-being of Black students. Fridays, 2:00–3:00 pm via Zoom. To participate, email [log in to unmask] from your Baruch student email account.
  • Stress Management Support Session: The end of the semester can be a difficult time—with upcoming finals and end-of-term projects and schoolwork coming due. To help students during this time, the Counseling Center is offering a Stress Management Support Session, today, Thursday, Dec. 8, 1:00–2:00 pm, in-person, 137 East 25th Street, 9th floor (entrance between the library and the Welcome Center).

The NCAA’s Office of Inclusion recently released numerous resources that focus on providing diverse and inclusive environments within the athletic and campus community. Topics include supporting student-athletes with disabilities, an inclusive language guide, a DEI Review Framework, an International Student Athlete Guide, and a report titled The State of Women in College Sports.
