Announcing Baruch’s Collaboration with the New York African Diaspora International Film Festival and the Screening of Black Mexicans/La Negrada

Dear Baruch College Community Members,

Please note that, with the generous support of the CUNY Black, Race and Ethnic Studies Initiative (BRESI) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the College’s Office of Diversity, Compliance, and Equity Initiatives (ODCEI) will host lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings throughout the 2022–23 academic year.

Specifically, Baruch’s ODCEI administrators will use CUNY BRESI funds to foster a collaboration with the New York African Diaspora International Film Festival (NYADIFF) to present virtual and in-person film screenings from the extensive cinema libraries of NYADIFF and Artmattan Films. Each screening will also feature conversations with the filmmakers and/or panelists.

Mark Your Calendar: Virtual Screening of Black Mexicans/La Negrada

Our first event will be a virtual screening of the feature film Black Mexicans/La Negrada (2018, Spanish with English subtitles). Following the screening, Dr. Reinaldo Barbosa-Spech, president of ArtMattan Productions, and Dr. Keisha Allan, Assistant Professor in Baruch’s Department of Black and Latino Studies, will participate in a virtual conversation with Jorge Pérez Solano, Director of Black Mexicans/La Negrada, about his work on this film, the first Mexican film to focus on the experiences of Afro-Mexicans. Details below.

Virtual Film Screening and Discussion: Black Mexicans/La Negrada

Wednesday, Nov. 16

5:15–7:00 pm

For those not able to participate in the event in real time, the film will be available to the Baruch community on a special platform from Monday, Nov. 14–Friday, Nov. 18.

We look forward to seeing many of you virtually and in person at these events throughout the current year and will share the latest in this series as events become available.
