The Passing of Mildred Weissman

Dear Baruch Community,

<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/images/Mildred%20Weissman.JPG> I write to share the news that Mildred Weissman, who was among Baruch College’s most prominent benefactors, passed away on February 6 at the age of 102. While I never had the privilege of meeting Mildred, she left a lasting legacy on our campus for which I am deeply grateful.

Along with her late husband George (’39), they named our School of Arts and Sciences in 1998, motivated by a strong belief in the importance of a liberal arts grounding for students and a deep belief in the power of the arts in life. Together, they also established the Weissman Center for International Business, which has enriched student preparation for careers in the global workforce for nearly three decades. A generous benefactor to Baruch in her own right, Mildred provided significant gifts after George’s passing to increase the endowments of both the Weissman School and the Weissman Center, thus helping to ensure that both would thrive for many generations to come. Mildred was among the first recipients of our prestigious Newman Medal for Philanthropy in 2008.

While Mildred was not a Baruch graduate, she was a daughter of CUNY, graduating from Hunter College, and deeply committed to public higher education. She was a passionate supporter of women’s rights and served on the boards of the Jewish Museum and Lilith magazine and was a founder of US/Israel Women for Women, now part of the National Council of Jewish Women. She was also a major supporter of the National Women’s History Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

When I asked those on campus who knew Mildred what words best described her, I heard “gracious,” “funny,” “warm,” and “smart.” We will remember her with deep appreciation as a leading catalyst that helped propel Baruch to new heights.

Sincerely,

S. David Wu

President, Baruch College
