November Is Native American Heritage Month

Dear Baruch Students and Colleagues,

The Office of Diversity, Compliance, and Equity Initiatives (ODCEI) celebrates Native American Heritage Month and recognizes the efforts of the U.S. government to focus national attention on the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous peoples, nations, and communities.

As part of this national celebration, the following federal agencies and national organizations are providing information and hosting special events—many of which are online with advanced registration:

• Library of Congress
• National Archives and Records Administration
• National Congress of American Indians
• National Endowment for the Humanities
• National Museum of the American Indian website and calendar
• National Park Service, through its Historic Places Program, celebrates National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, and also offers an events calendar
• Smithsonian Institution
• U.S. Department of the Interior, Indian Affairs
• PBS celebrates Native American Heritage Month 2021
• PBS celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Films featuring Indigenous Voices 2021 

New York Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

The history and contributions of Native American cultures are integral to New York. As described on the Path Through History: Native Americans platform of the NYS Path Through History website, that features a virtual tour, “Long before European settlers set foot on the land that would become New York, Native nations had built thriving civilizations here. The culture and customs of these first inhabitants helped shape our great state and remain a powerful force today.”

ODCEI Shares Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Resources

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month 2021, below are educational resources for your information and sharing.

• American Indian Nurse Scholarship Award Program and the application is available on the NSCDA website
• Catching the Dream, a national scholarship program for Native American college applicants
• The Cobell Scholarship, managed by Indigenous Education, Inc.
• Cobell Scholarships - All Opportunities
• Pursuant to New York State Education Law Article 83, the Native American Education Unit of the New York State Education Department
• allocates State funding and provides assistance to public school districts that educate Native American children residing on reservations throughout the State and
• administers the New York State Indian Aid program, which provides funding for Native American students attending postsecondary schools, colleges, and universities
• Native Nation Events, LLC hosts Educational and Networking Forums within the Native American Marketplace, including two Native American Leadership conferences during the 2021-22 academic year
