Baruch Named a U.S. News & World Report “Best Regional University–North” for 2021

Once again Baruch College ranks as one of the best institutions in the region for academic excellence, student success, faculty resources, and affordability, according to U.S. News & World Report’s just-released “2021 Best Regional Universities-North” rankings.

 

The 2021 rankings place Baruch among the top-five schools in key categories: public institutions (#4), social mobility (#2), least student debt at graduation (#3), and campus ethnic diversity (tie for #3).

 

Top Rankings Kick Off the Academic Year: USN&WR’s “2021 Best Regional Universities-North” rankings add to the growing list of Baruch’s honors for high-quality academics and advancing students to career success, including:

·         #1: in New York, among public and private institutions – Money

·         Best 386 Colleges” – The Princeton Review

·         #1: “Four-Year Public Colleges as Engines of Economic Mobility” – Brookings Institution

President Wu Named to New York’s “50 Most Influential Leaders in Higher Education”

City & State has named President S. David Wu to its “2020 Higher Education Power 50” list, which recognizes the most-influential people in academia throughout New York, including leaders of some of state’s best-known colleges, universities, and professional schools. Said the president, “It is an incredible honor to receive another recognition from City & State.” (Just weeks into his presidency, the president was named to City & State’s inaugural “Power of Diversity: Asian 100” list.) Weissman Professor Awarded $1.4 Million NIH Grant

The rewiring of the human brain as a result of physical or emotional trauma represents one example of the way in which neurons are reshaped in a process referred to as synaptic plasticity, explains Pablo Peixoto, associate professor in the Department of Natural Sciences. Dr. Peixoto was awarded a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund research into how neurons adapt to frequently changing levels of activity. Read more.

It was big week on social media for CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez, who was interviewed by Errol Louis on NY1’s Inside City Hall about the University’s reopening plans, technology support programs, and business-university partnerships.

Among his other messages to his followers, the chancellor reshared a heartfelt Instagram post of his meeting with CUNY’s student Dreamers, writing, “
This reception was for Dreamers, whom we will continue to support and ensure that they are treated fairly. They contribute so much to our country and to the CUNY community.” Until we convene again…

Technology Loan Program for Students

Baruch is committed to giving students access to the technology needed to be successful in Fall 2020’s distance learning environment. Please visit the Baruch College Technology Center’s blog for updated procedures to follow to request an iPad, Chromebook, or other technology.

 

Quiet Study Spaces Available

As of today, Sept. 16, Baruch students have the opportunity to reserve quiet study spaces on campus. Read “Introducing Quiet Study Spaces” to learn more. Note: Students not yet issued their Baruch ID cards may enter (type in) either their EMPL ID or SSN into the system at the Security Desk to gain access to the quiet spaces, provided the student has cleared the health screening.

Starr Career Development Center’s Fall 2020 Virtual Job & Internship Fair is fully online and operated under Starr Search using video chats. Services from the Counseling Center

Baruch College’s Counseling Center offers students free and confidential individual and group counseling and support sessions and Black Mental Health Matters (BMHM) Support Sessions.

·         Individual Counseling: Please visit the Counseling Center’s website or email [log in to unmask]

·         Group Counseling: Are you struggling with a new transition, feeling lonely, wanting to make new connections, or having trouble in your relationships? The Counseling Center is offering two sessions of Relationship to Self and Others. Two groups meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1–2 pm, on Zoom. ·         Black Mental Health Matters (BMHM) Support Sessions: In light of the recent events of racial violence and injustice towards Blacks and the outcry for support, the Baruch College Counseling Center has begun offering support sessions aimed at fostering and supporting the growth, networking, collaboration, success, and well-being of Black students. If you are looking for a safe space to meet and talk, then this group is for you. BMHM is led by psychologists Jael Amador, PhD, and Gary Dillon, PhD, who work from a social justice and multicultural framework. On Wednesdays, 2-3 pm, via Zoom. September is Latinx Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and commemorate the contributions and achievements of the Latinx community.
