The following announcement is being forwarded on behalf of Shiro Horiuchi.

----------

Dear CUNY Faculty Members:

We are writing to invite you and other faculty who may be interested to an Interdisciplinary Forum on Obesity Research at CUNY to be held on Monday, October 17 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in Room 4102 at the Graduate Center. The goal of the meeting is to bring together CUNY faculty members who are currently engaged in research on obesity related topics for the purpose of learning what others at CUNY are doing on this topic, identifying common areas of interest and discussing what might be a more focused CUNY research agenda on obesity. We are the Executive Officers of the doctoral programs in Nursing Science and Public Health at the Graduate Center and this summer traveled with a few of our doctoral students and faculty to Cape Town, South Africa and London to develop an existing research collaborative on municipal responses to child obesity. We were impressed by the potential of obesity to serve as a lens through which to examine a wide variety of biological, cultural, political, economic and environmental factors. You can read more about our trip here.

We understand that other colleagues have broader interests in food studies, food policy and related topics and we welcome these faculty to this meeting but as health researchers we propose to begin this conversation with a focus on obesity. In addition, while those attending the meeting may decide to meet again, at this point we are asking only for a commitment to come to this one meeting.

Description of some of the obesity work now going on at CUNY

With regards,

N and K
