Dear CIDR colleagues, students, and friends,

Attached is the flyer about the Spring 2014 courses offered by the Demography Certificate Program at the CUNY Graduate Center.

In "Methods of Demographic Analysis", Professor Frank Heiland will give an overview of major demographic methods essential for studying populations. This is a well-established course of high reputation, and a “must” course for any CUNY students interested in demography.

We are also excited about offering a new course, "Big Data and Population Processes". With the explosion of Internet and mobile phone use, there is an increasing awareness of the importance and usefulness of data from those sources (Big Data). Analysis and collection of Big Data, together with microsimulations and agent-based models, will be taught by Professor Emilio Zagheni, who is organizing the first PAA session on Big Data at the forthcoming 2014 PAA meeting.

We greatly appreciate your help in disseminating this information to CUNY students who might be interested in these courses. Also, doctoral students at other universities in the NY metropolitan area can take our courses through the Inter-University Consortium Program.

Thank you very much,

Shiro Horiuchi, Ph.D.

Coordinator, Certificate Program in Demography, CUNY Graduate Center
