FROM: Ned Regan
President
DATE: August 18, 2003
I would like to thank all those who worked during the blackout to ensure the safety of
our students and staff and to return our campus to normal operations.
I particularly want to thank our Security and Building Departments, Computing and
Technology Center, and the members of the Emergency Management Team. Many
individuals also deserve credit, including our Student Affairs staff and faculty
members and administrators who volunteered to help. Some employees worked 12-
and 15-hour shifts; a few worked the entire 30 hours that power was out.
The fact that most people will return to campus today and business will be as usual
is due to the efforts of dedicated employees who came in over the weekend and
cleaned the public spaces, rebooted our computing and telecommunications
equipment, and tested and retested our building and safety systems.
While it is impossible to plan for every contingency, we will, of course, review our
protocols for handling emergencies in the wake of the blackout. What we learn from
this incident will strengthen our preparedness in the event of a future emergency.
Again, my thanks to all those who helped during this challenging period. Your
professionalism and concern for other members of the Baruch community make me
proud to be president of this institution.
