1. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

Several development initiatives that might be of interest to Baruch
faculty are in the works. Three are outlined below:

1. Faculty/Staff Lounge(s)
     a. 17 Lex: Those teaching in 17 Lex should know of the availability
of Room 215 as a facility for storing valuables while teaching and for
meeting with students.

     b. VC: Starting Monday, October 7, refreshments will be available in
Room 14-290 of the Vertical Campus. From 8 am to 6 pm, Mondays
through Thursdays, coffee, tea, pastries, and newspapers will be
available to all faculty and staff free of charge. The pastries will last
until they run out; the drinks will be refreshed throughout the day (no
thermoses please);
the newspapers should remain in the room. Later in the semester,
when new furniture for 14-290 has arrived, we will hold an official
opening party. We may initiate lunch service (a $7.50 buffet) in the
lounge if there is sufficient interest.

2. Faculty Handbook
Before the end of October, a faculty handbook will be available on the
web in a format suitable for printing. It will contain useful information
on a wide variety of subjects and will be regularly updated and
expanded. Suggestions for additions and revisions will be welcome;
stay tuned for announcement of the opening of this website.

3. Faculty Development Seminars
Beginning Friday, November 1, the Provost's Office will sponsor a
series of first-Friday-of-the-month discussions on topics of interest to
faculty, such as academic honesty (including a look at our current
policies -- see

http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/academic/academic_honesty.html

for a statement of the policies in effect), engaging students in
discussion, teaching large sections, writing across the curriculum,
etc. Discussions will start at 10 am; coffee, tea, and pastries will be
available starting at 9:30. The topic of each meeting will be circulated
in advance; suggestions for topics are welcome. All faculty are invited
to participate.

Feedback
Please send email regarding any of the above (interest in lunches,
potential events for the faculty lounge; ideas for the handbook; topics
for faculty development seminars; comments on the ethics seminar)
or with any suggestions for additional faculty development initiatives to

2. Selecting next yearÕs freshman textÉÉ.

To Baruch College Faculty and Staff:

Colson Whitehead, the author of this yearÕs freshman text, John Henry
Days, was recently selected as a 2002 MacArthur Fellow. This is one
of several awards Mr. Whitehead has garnered, including the
Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. Please join with me in congratulating him.
The members of the 2002 freshman text committee, as well, deserve
our thanks.

We now face the challenge of choosing a freshman text for next year.
Our aim is to reach a decision early in the 2003 calendar year to give
faculty more time to consider how to use the text in their courses. An
early decision will also give us the opportunity to provide additional
programming in support of the book.

I encourage anyone interested in serving on the selection committee
to contact Mark Spergel by October 21. Contact information is:

The committeeÕs initial meeting will be held in November. In previous
years membership has come from the entire College and we hope to
continue with broad participation. The freshmen text and convocation,
though designed for first-year students, convey an important message
about Baruch to the institution and the outside world.

The task of the freshman text selection committee is exciting,
invigorating and deeply gratifying. I thank you for your participation.

Sincerely yours,

David Dannenbring
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
