Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Freshman Text Selection Committee, I am pleased to announce
that we have chosen Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By
in America" to be Baruch's 2004-05 freshman text. The book is Ehrenreich's account
of the three months she spent as a low-wage worker in various jobs in three different
American cities.

All faculty who teach freshman blocks are strongly enouraged to incorporate the
book into their courses.

Details about book distribution and convocation, as well as suggestions on how to
incorporate the text into the curriculum, will follow in the coming weeks.

Thanks,
Liz Wollman, Chair
