To: The Baruch Community
From: David Dannenbring, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

After almost six years as the Dean of Baruch's School of Public Affairs,
Stan Altman has announced his intention to step down at the end of this
semester. He will continue to serve the Baruch Community as a faculty
member of the School of Public Affairs.

During his tenure as Dean, Stan has brought his energy and vision to the
School and College. Enrollments in SPA, both at the graduate and
undergraduate levels, increased nearly 40% from Fall 1999 to Fall 2004.
At the same time, the quality of the students also increased, and
student services and advisement were strengthened. Dean Altman expanded
the outreach of the School of Public Affairs through SPA's executive
programs, creation of centers, and collaborative research projects.
Today Baruch's School of Public Affairs proudly serves as a partner to
the NYC Leadership Academy, United Way of New York City, the NYC Health
and Hospitals Corporation, the Hispanic Federation, the New York City
Council, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and
Partnership for After School Education, to name just a few. SPA's role
in these partnerships includes developing the next generation of
individuals to lead these organizations and the organizations they
serve. Through the Ackerman Lecture series and the School's many public
forums and conferences, SPA informs New Yorkers about critical public
policy issues that challenge us as a civil society. SPA has truly
become the School of Public Affairs for the City of New York. The
University recognized the contribution the School makes to the City and
to the nation by designating it a flagship school within CUNY.

When asked what he views as one of his major accomplishments as Dean,
Stan points to the incredible productivity and engagement of the faculty
in School of Public Affairs and the achievements of its graduates.
Clearly, Stan's leadership has helped create an environment that
nurtured and supported the School's students as well as its faculty and
staff.

I know that we are all grateful for Stan's vision, dedication, and hard
work, and that we will welcome him back to the faculty.
