Re: Dropping a Course
_________________________________________________________________
As you may know by now, the College is requiring some students to obtain the
Instructor’s signature on the “Application to Drop A Course” prior to processing their
withdrawal from a course. This policy which applies only to students who completely
withdraw from all their courses, has been implemented in response to a US
Department of Education (DOE) ruling that imposed penalties on a number of CUNY
Colleges over their inability to determine the last date of attendance in class for
Federal financial aid recipients and return those funds that the students would no
longer be eligible to receive to DOE in an allowable timeframe.

The instructor’s signature is an acceptable method of verifying the last date of
attendance reported on this application by the student. They should sign the form
next to the date the student indicated they last attended the class. This is a short-
term solution to the problem. We are exploring methods to obtain the necessary
information in a manner that would be less taxing on students, faculty and staff. We
welcome suggestions and ideas.

I apologize for this information not being communicated to the College Community
earlier. The delay was unavoidable. The Registrar will provide more comprehensive
information upon her return from bereavement leave.

Change in Service to Faculty/Staff Lounge

We regret to announce that decreased resources will
mean that the college cannot continue to provide food
in the Faculty/Staff Lounge (VC 14-290). We shall,
however, continue to serve coffee and tea without charge,
Mondays through Thursdays until the end of the semester.
As before, everyone is invited to bring his/her own food to
the Lounge and to make use of the microwave oven.

Many thanks to those who participated last December in
our survey on the use of the Lounge. Unfortunately, the
current lack of resources makes it impossible to put into
effect the excellent ideas that emerged from the survey.

Associate Provost
