The Freshmen Text Committee has been formed and has met once,
and now seeks from faculty and staff suggestions of books that would
work for next fall's entering class.

The primary purpose of the common text is to get entering freshmen
excited about entering the college community.

A secondary purpose is the integration of the text into the freshman
block curriculum.

The committee is especially dedicated to finding a text that will intrigue
the students and make them eager to read. Thus, please take into
consideration the relevance of the text to students' frame of reference:
acculturation to American life; bi-cultural identity; coming of age, etc.

Because our wish is to find a text early enough for faculty to be able to
make good use of it in freshman classes, we would like suggestions
as soon as possible. And for that integration, you might keep in mind
the adaptability of the book to a range of disciplinary concerns. For
example, it might address some important cultural values - ethics,
education, etc. and/or some significant cultural issue - racism,
religious conflict, etc.

Please do provide details about the book: the synopses available from
Barnes and Noble online, or from Amazon, are most helpful. (This
also is a good way to make sure the book you're suggesting is
actually in print.)

Those making suggestions can contact Susan Locke, chair of the
committee, at [log in to unmask], or Vince Passaro, who
can be reached by replying to this e-mail.

Thank you.
