Beginning February 1, 2003, it will be necessary to dial an area code to
complete a local call. This applies to all calls made within and between
212, 347, 646, 718 and 917 area codes. Even if you are dialing a number
within the same area code you must now dial the following sequence:
1 (area code) telephone number. For example, you must now dial:
  1 (212) xxx-xxxx when calling from (212) yyy-yyyy.
Four-digit internal dialing within each of the campus systems will not be
affected.

This requirement is not Baruch College specific, but required by the
Federal Communications Commission. Remember to re-program any automatic
dialers, fax machines, modems, alarms, cell phones, call forwarding
features or speed dial keys on your telephone both at the College and at
home.

Mitel “312” users may choose to program one of the keys on their phone to
facilitate making local calls. See Instructions for Programming Speed
Dialing Option for Local Calls.

Centrex users “802” do not have speed programming options.

For more information visit the Verizon website at
http://www.verizon.com/areacodes. For College specific information, call
the telephone helpdesk at (646) 312-2355.
