Capoeira-the African-Brazilian martial art often described as the
'national sport' of Brazil-is one of the performing arts featured in this
lecture and presentation. The eventÕs opening presentation by scholar
C. Daniel Dawson, "Fist Against Fist Is Irrational," focuses on the
influence of Kongolese movement and physical culture on the
development of 'Creole' dance, music and martial arts in the
Caribbean and in Latin America, with the KiKongo language loaning
familiar words like 'rumba', 'samba', 'tango', and 'cumbia' to the New
World vocabulary. The performance segment of the event will feature
dancers and musicans demonstrating these and other types of
dances and martial arts.
Admission is free.
