FACULTY SEMINAR: TEACHING ETHICS
Examining how we teach ethics at the College seems particularly
important
in light of the myriad corporate scandals of recent months. To that end,
President Regan will sponsor a faculty seminar during Spring 2003
on the
teaching of ethics. The seminar will look at the theory and practice of
our
curriculum as well as broader issues outside the College.

Although all faculty and students will be invited to attend, a small
number, designated as members of the seminar, will participate
regularly
and take responsibility for leading some of the discussions and/or
making
presentations. Members will receive modest remuneration for their
participation. Outside speakers also may participate.

Faculty interested in being seminar members should notify their
Department
Chairs by October 18. Members will be chosen by the Provost's office
with
an eye towards a balance of disciplines and distribution among the
components of the College.

Lastly, a word of congratulations to the Newman Library and its faculty
and staff -- the Newman Library has been nominated for the
Excellence in Academic Libraries Award by the Association of College
and Research Libraries.

Previous winners of this prestigious national award have been Oberlin
College (2002), Earlham College (2001) and Wellesley College
(2000). We are preparing the materials that have been requested by
the selection committee to evaluate the nominees and choose the
winner. The committee will announce its decision in early January.
