SCHWART COMMUNICATION CENTER SYMPOSIUM ON
COMMUNICATION INTENSIVE INSTRUCTION

The college's new core curriculum emphasizes teaching
Communication within every discipline. "Teaching Content and
Communication" is: 1) directly relevant to discipline-based
communication and 2) the topic of the Third Annual Symposium on
Communication and Communication Intensive Instruction, sponsored
by the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute.

The symposium will take place on Friday, October 11, from 9:00 to
5:00 in the Conference Center (14th Floor of the Vertical Campus at 55
Lexington Avenue). Academics and business professionals from
across the country will focus on ways to use oral, written, and
computer-mediated communication to teach both content and
communication. In the morning, we will discuss issues relating to
their integration in the world of business and academia.

In the afternoon, we will consider how the issues raised in the
morning can be applied concretely in individual disciplines. The areas
invitees have proposed to consider range from the general (business,
the social sciences, and the humanities) to the specific (accounting,
developing a freshman-level business course, freshman writing,
American government, management, math, psychology, computer
science, the natural sciences, and nursing). Participation in these
discussions by Baruch faculty is an important goal of the symposium.

Breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 9:00. Cocktails and dinner will be
from 5:00-7:30. There is no charge for Baruch faculty, but registration
by September 28 is required and seating is limited.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Paul Arpaia by
September 28 at 646.312.2062 or [log in to unmask]

ATT'Y GENERAL ELIOT SPITZER

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to hear ELIOT L. SPITZER, New York
State Attorney General, interviewed by JOSHUA MILLS, Baruch College
Professor of Business Journalism, on September 24th, 2002, at 6pm.
The interview will be followed by questions from the floor.

Eliot Spitzer, elected Attorney General of New York in 1998, expanded
the scope of the office by bringing suits against gun manufacturers,
drug companies and mid western polluters. Before the Enron
scandal, Spitzer used state fraud laws against Wall Street brokerage
firms, even though historically regulation of financial markets has
been a Federal responsibility. He sued brokerages for publishing
false and misleading analystsÕ recommendations, and won a $100
million fine and a public apology from Merrill Lynch.

This event is free and open to all interested professionals, and carries
one CPE credit. A reception will follow the event.

Location: Baruch College Ð CUNY, 151 East 25th Street, William and
Anita Newman Conference Center, 7th Floor
