Subject: Classroom Access Control
Date: February 24, 2003
Originally classroom doors were programmed to open 10 minutes before the
scheduled class and to lock 20 minutes after class began. This system was
implemented in the event a faculty member was late. However, based upon
feedback during the first academic year in the Vertical Campus, the system has been
reprogrammed at the beginning of January 2003 for the spring session.
Faculty members will now swipe their cards to gain access to classrooms. This
swipe will accomplish two purposes. First, it will open the door and allow it to stay
open for one hour. Second, it will automatically lock the door one hour after the card
has been swiped. This relieves the faculty of the responsibility of having to swipe
again in order to lock the door. The doors will no longer have to be propped open
with chairs, waste basket bins, etc., allowing access and egress as necessary.
This solution will allow faculty and students the required access while keeping our
“smart classrooms” secure. It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain a safe and
secure environment – faculty, staff and students.
