All Baruch computer users should be aware of the "BugBear" virus which
propogated throughout the global Internet via e-mail this past Thursday
morning, June 5. This alert is particularly directed at off-campus
computer users.

Off-Campus computers: the College does not provide anti-virus support for
computers outside the campus. You should make sure that you have
anti-virus software (e.g., Norton, McAfee, Command anti-virus) installed and
kept up-to-date on any off-campus PC, and we advise you to run a full
manual scan on all such systems at this time. In addition, the following
Web page provides both information and, behind the "removal instructions"
tab at the upper right, a downloadable anti-Bugbear program:

On-Campus computers: The college has been installing Norton Anti-Virus
software on all campus computers over the past year, and our Norton
software environment is set up to automatically update all Norton-protected
computers on campus as soon as the vendor issues any emergency patch. That
was accomplished within a few hours on Thursday. So, although numerous
infections were initially reported, all Baruch office and lab computers
should now be safe from BugBear - except for those few PC's, likely older
ones, which still are not running Norton. If you think your office
computer may not be running Norton, contact your school Tech Coordinator or
the BCTC help desk at (646) 312-1010.
