Get Counted: Today is National Census Day

To the Baruch College Community,

I know we are all busy thinking how we can protect ourselves and our families, and get through this public health crisis. But there is another pressing need that I urge you not to forget about, as it will affect our readiness for future health emergencies. Each of us must complete the 2020 Census<http://my2020census.gov/>.

Today is National Census Day, and it is important to consider that our ability to address a wide variety of important public needs-from disaster planning, to education, transportation, and public health-is the direct result of our census responses. The census determines how the federal government allocates more than $675 billion a year. The funding our city relies upon will be jeopardized unless we all-every single household-respond to the census.

Baruch Students Explain the Importance of the Census
[Baruch Census Corps_TWAB_still 180x180]<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ6EfnYnb9Y>
In this two-minute video<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ6EfnYnb9Y>, you can hear three Baruch students-all members of the CUNY Census Corps-explain what the census means to them and how important it is to our college and the neighborhoods we live in.

They remind us all that:

* Immigration status doesn't matter (there is no citizenship question)!

* Language doesn't matter (the census will collect responses in 13 languages)!

* Age doesn't matter (babies count too)!

It is also important for all of us to encourage other family members and friends to complete the census.

Take 10 Minutes to Protect New York State

Our political clout in Washington is also at risk. New York State could lose up to two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. If we have fewer people fighting for us in Congress, our voices will be diminished. Right now, the response rate in New York City is lower than in the rest of the country. New Yorkers are competitive. We cannot let other states beat us!

Please complete the 2020 Census online<http://my2020census.gov/> or by phone<https://www.cuny.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/page-assets/academics/current-initiatives/cuny-census/Census-Phone-Numbers.pdf> and eliminate the need for a census worker to visit your home, which is safer for everyone.

Completing the census is easy. There are only 10 questions-and you can do it online, by phone, or by mail. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete-but the impact will be felt for the next 10 years.

We have only one chance per decade to get this right. Complete the census<http://my2020census.gov/> right now-and please tell two people you know to do the same.

Please also stay safe and well.

Sincerely,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, PhD
President, Baruch College
