Baruch College's Self-Study 2020: Update on Re-accreditation

Dear Students,

In Spring 2020, Baruch College will be reviewed for re-accreditation. The stakes are significant. For our students to be eligible for Title IV financial aid, we must be accredited by a federally recognized regional accrediting body. Accreditation also makes it possible for you to transfer credit for courses taken at other colleges. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has been Baruch College's accrediting organization since our founding in 1968. The re-accreditation process, which takes place every 10 years, includes writing a "self-study" and welcoming an evaluation team of colleagues from other colleges and universities.

The Self-Study So Far

To prepare for this review, in Spring 2018 about 60 members of our faculty, staff, and student body divided into Working Groups and conducted research on the issues that MSCHE wants all colleges to address in their self-studies.

In Spring 2019, the co-chairs of the Self-Study team worked on a complete draft of that information, which was released for comment to faculty, staff, and students. Throughout August and September, many comments were received, and the draft was revised based on that input.

Baruch College is grateful for your participation in community conversations and any suggestions you might have sent on the Self-Study.

Milestones & Looking Forward

Now we've arrived at a significant moment in this multiyear process: On Friday, October 25, Baruch College sent the chair of the re-accrediting team the newly revised Self-Study draft. He will visit Baruch on Wednesday, November 13, to meet with various groups and provide us with feedback on our Self-Study. The final version will be sent in January 2020 to the chair and to the other members of the visiting team. The full evaluation team visit will take place March 1-4, 2020.

I'll be back in touch in January with a link to the final version of the Study-Study and with additional information about the evaluation team site visit.

Thank you,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, PhD
President, Baruch College
