Baruch Partners with the CIA for Student Professional Development

To Students, Faculty, and Staff:

This past August, I signed an agreement on behalf of the College to facilitate opportunities for Baruch students, and particularly underrepresented minority students, to learn about and consider pursuing careers with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which offers a myriad of professional positions that include hundreds of analyst positions.

The underlying reason for the agreement is the stated intention of the CIA to diversify its workforce. The opportunity was also attractive to the College, given our historic commitment to providing pathways to economic opportunity for all of our students and alumni. The CIA has identified a select group of universities across the country, which currently includes, in addition to Baruch, the University of Illinois, Chicago; the University of New Mexico; and Florida International University. A fifth partnership will be announced shortly. All of these campuses have rigorous academic programs and enroll high percentages of underrepresented minority students.

In practice, the CIA has already been participating in job fairs on the Baruch campus for more than a decade. This agreement amplifies the agency's recruitment efforts by giving Baruch students and alumni priority consideration for internships and full-time positions. The College provides nothing in return, save for making our students aware of the recruitment opportunities through job fairs, etc. The agency is also willing to send experts to speak on campus if our faculty make such a request; that option is, however, entirely up to individual members of the faculty. Baruch College receives no monetary compensation for participating in this network of "Signature Schools."

About two months ago, I shared the Memorandum of Understanding between Baruch College and the Central Intelligence Agency with the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate, at its request. Today, I am sharing the agreement with the entire college community via our website<http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/recruiting.html>.

Regards,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein
President
