Baruch Voices: The Community Speaks Out

The Time to Address Racism and Injustice
The senseless death of George Floyd has saddened, frustrated, and angered our city and country and sparked protests and calls to end the systemic inequality and injustice that afflicts people of color. Members of Baruch’s community are speaking out, joining the chorus of “no more”:

· “Why We Can’t Breathe<https://www.fourthreethree.org/blog/why-we-cant-breathe>”: Associate Professor of Black and Latino Studies Regina A. Bernard, PhD, penned a powerful, impassioned essay about standing witness to violence against African Americans. In it, she writes, “We forget that this is not just today, not just yesterday, but could be tomorrow and the day after.”

· Time to Address Ingrained Racism and Disparities<https://provost.baruch.cuny.edu/messages/our-mission-means-more-than-ever/>: Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs James McCarthy, PhD, reached out to the community on Monday morning, writing, “We have made gains, but this spring has shown that our society—and we—have more to do.”

· Dear Members of the Baruch Community<https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/wsas/faculty_resources/Facultyletter.htm>: The chairs and dean of the Weissman School share their thoughts about the tragedy, ongoing injustices, and the College’s key role in righting wrongs: “We reaffirm our commitment to continuing to build and expand an equitable and diverse community at every level, one that values and respects all individuals.”

Exploring Solutions: Faculty Research

The University’s research blog, SUM, recently highlighted research by Baruch professors that address race and social justice, including:

· “Could Immigrant-Labor Partnerships Be the Key to Socio-Economic Justice?<https://sum.cuny.edu/immigrant-labor-union-justice-baruch-college/>”: Research co-authored by Associate Professor of Political Science Els de Graauw, PhD, analyzes the impact of local context on immigrant-labor partnership strategies.
· “The Startling History of America’s Favorite Drug—Coffee<https://sum.cuny.edu/coffeeland-history-book-augustine-sedgewick/>”: Adjunct Assistant Professor of History Augustine Sedgewick’s book Coffeeland: One Man’s Dark Empire and the Making of Our Favorite Drug, explores coffee production’s history of exploitation and greed.

· “The Young Lords: The Puerto Rican Activists Who Shook Up NYC<https://sum.cuny.edu/young-lords-puerto-rican-activists-shook-up-nyc/>”: With nearly 9,000 pageviews, SUM’s story on The Young Lords: A Radical History by Assistant Professor of History Johanna Fernández was SUM’s most popular post ever.

The Community Connections<https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/coronavirus/CommunityConnections.htm> website will continue to offer a platform—“Baruch Community Speaks Out”—to share, discuss, and empower.
