Update on Campus-wide Construction Projects

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

This has been a productive academic year for campus facilities, with more than 24 active capital construction projects in varying degrees of progress. Most of the projects are supported by state and city capital funds. Two notable exceptions: alumni donors provided financial backing for the Clivner=Field Plaza and Allen G. and Mary E. Aaronson Student Center and the Undergraduate Student Government initiated a student fee to support creation of the student center.

Below are some specific project highlights:

17 Lexington Phase 1A
The construction project was kicked-off in January 2017 and will be completed by January 2020. It will transform the lobby and Lexington Avenue entrance, provide extensive infrastructure upgrades, replace the six elevators, and construct a new base for the future bank of additional elevators.

* During weekends in November and December, a crane will lift a new emergency generator and new cooling tower up on the roof of the building.

* The mechanical and cab upgrade of two of the six elevators is nearing completion; we expect them to come back early in 2019. Once the two elevators come back online, two other elevators will go off-line for upgrading.

* Demolition of the lobby storefront entrance has begun. Extensive demolition in the basement and lobby waiting area is complete, along with structural framing and completion of the floor slab in this area.

* Con Ed vault construction is complete but some further minor modifications will be done in the future to meet some additional Con Ed requirements. This will allow for increased electrical service to the building.

Clivner=Field Plaza
Baruch is working with the city's Departments of Transportation and Design & Construction, as well as Mathews Nielson Landscape Architects, on the design and construction of a permanent plaza. This wonderful addition to our campus is being funded by generous donors, New York City Council Resolution-A grants, and capital funding allocated by CUNY. Construction started in July and will be completed in phases.

* Contractors are currently focused on underground utilities work including gas and water mains, and water runoff catch basins.

* Anticipated completion date for the project is early 2020.

Allen G. and Mary E. Aaronson Student Center
The new 5,500-square-foot student center, designed by CTS Group Architecture Planning, will be located in the Madison Square Post Office.

* Construction is expected to start imminently and be completed by end of 2019.

* A portion of the 24th Street USPS lobby will be built out to serve exclusively as Baruch's entrance and lobby, with an elevator and convenience stairwell leading to the center in the basement.

Information Technology Building (ITB)/Library Skylight Panel Replacement
The atrium skylight in the ITB has damaged glass panels that need to be replaced, along with framing that needs to be reinforced. The project is expected to stop water infiltration and result in significant energy savings.

* A massive scaffold is being erected in the atrium, extending from the second through the ninth floors to create a working platform underneath the skylight. The installation should be completed shortly.

* Construction is anticipated to be completed by late spring 2019.

* Replacing the building's roof will then follow in summer 2019.

Lactation Room
This fall, we opened a comfortable lactation room for faculty and staff on the first floor of the ITB. Faculty and staff have been requesting it for quite some time. Information on its use is posted on the OHR web page<http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/hr/LactationRoomAccess.htm>.

We appreciate that facilities projects can result in some frustrations and inconveniences. I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we move our campus forward, and ask that you contact Baruch's Buildings and Grounds (Ext. 6630) with any questions or concerns.

I will continue to update you regularly on our progress.

Sincerely,

Lisa Edwards
Assistant Vice President, Campus Facilities
