My Final Year as Baruch College President

To the Baruch College Community:

I am writing to inform you that I have decided that this will be my final year as president of Baruch College. I have informed the interim chancellor that I intend to step down next June following commencement. I expect to remain associated with CUNY thereafter as a university professor, and will be writing and teaching courses in the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.

With our new, five-year strategic plan completed, work well underway for the decennial Middle States reaccreditation and the Zicklin School of Business AACSB reaccreditation (both in 2019-20), all three schools named and endowed (we are the only college in CUNY to enjoy this status), more than $165 million raised during my tenure, and construction in various stages of progress on Clivner=Field Plaza, 17 Lex (Lawrence and Eris Field Building), and the Allen G. and Mary E. Aaronson Student Center, I feel that this is an appropriate moment for me to pass the torch to a new leader.

I have intentionally chosen to inform the interim chancellor of my plans at the start of the fall semester so the university will have ample time and opportunity to establish a search committee and retain the services of a national search firm. I would expect that the search committee will include significant representation from the Baruch faculty, staff, and student body. I have every expectation that the Baruch presidency will attract a number of strong candidates and that the next leader can be chosen by the end of the spring semester, thereby assuring a seamless transition in the summer of 2019. Baruch's national reputation and prestige are at an all-time high, as indicated by our recent #1 rankings, and this, too, should help attract interesting and well-qualified candidates.

It has been an honor and a privilege-and, indeed, the highlight of my career so far-to serve as your president for the past nine years, and I will always treasure the friendships and the many wonderful experiences that we have shared. I plan to deliver a comprehensive State of the College address during the spring semester, and I will continue to work hard between now and the end of the academic year to Make Baruch Better Every Day.

Sincerely,

Mitchel Wallerstein, PhD
President
