Campus Update: Three Transformative Projects Underway

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I am excited to share updates with you on three campus facilities projects. These projects are of great importance to the community and, when completed, will enhance the quality of life for us all.

Clivner=Field Plaza at 25th Street
[https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/images/ClivnerField%20Permanent%20Plaza%20Rendering_resized.png]We have reached an important milestone in the construction of the permanent plaza. The contractor has completed the underground utilities work on the plaza itself. That work included replacing and, in some cases, rerouting all the electrical, gas, and steam lines and replacing the water main and storm drains. Some of this underground infrastructure was more than 100 years old, and it was imperative to upgrade it before any work on the surface of the plaza began. These upgrades should help prolong the useful life of the underground infrastructure and, we hope, prevent disruptive maintenance for the foreseeable future.

With that completed, the contractor has begun the surface work, which includes demolition of existing seating structures, installing lighting and fire hydrants, and structural work to support the new monumental steps to be located on the Lexington Avenue side. The contractor is also in the process of completing utility work on the two street crossings at Lexington and Third Avenues.

Schedule: Because of the unanticipated complexity of the below-ground utilities work for the Clivner=Field Plaza, the projected March completion date has slipped significantly. The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), the plaza project manager, is reviewing an updated schedule. Once DDC completes its review, Baruch will have a new projected completion date. As soon as we have a date, I will share that news with the campus community.

Information and Technology Building: Terrazzo Floor and Atrium
Over the past weekend, contractors poured and polished the newly installed terrazzo floor in front of the elevators on the 7th floor of the Information and Technology Building. To accommodate this work, two elevators were offline and signs were posted to alert the Baruch community of the ongoing work. We expect to complete this project in about four weeks. The terrazzo floor replaces damaged floor tiles.

During off hours, contractors have also begun installing scaffolding in the William and Anita Newman Library atrium for the panel refurbishment project. Installation of the scaffolding should take about two weeks; refinishing the panels, about two months.

The Allen G. and Mary E. Aaronson Student Center
[https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/images/0112%20Baruch%20c2%203t_resized.jpg]We are on track to open the Aaronson Student Center, located in the historic Madison Square Station Post Office, for the Spring 2020 semester. A portion of the 24th Street post office lobby will be built out to serve as Baruch's student center lobby with an elevator and stairs leading to the 5,500-square-foot sub-ground-level space. The Aaronson Student Center will house a large multipurpose space, a lounge area, and meeting rooms.

As we continue work on these and other campus facilities projects, we appreciate your interest, continued patience, and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Katharine Cobb
Vice President for Administration and Finance
