Celebrating with Pride

Dear Students,

Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling in support of LGBTQ rights was a big victory for all civil rights advocates. Now gay, bisexual, and transgender people in all 50 states are protected against employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Prior to yesterday, only 24 states upheld such inalienable rights for LGBTQ people.

It is fitting that the Supreme Court issued its historic ruling in June, as we celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month. The month was designated to honor the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march, which occurred on June 28, 1970. That event was organized to observe the Stonewall uprising which had taken place the year before.

Pride Events March On
Even the pandemic cannot restrain the momentum as pride events march on. We encourage the Baruch community to participate in virtual events<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=w3zS2WVXyU6DCzr_qxBWRw&ref_id=9OLxUII7xUeLUDD0NGLoBg> taking place worldwide as we reflect on the progress we've made as a society and recognize the work that awaits.

In closing, I would like to share with the Baruch community the sentiment<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=emaHCtDd5UOUweGa70_SFg&ref_id=9OLxUII7xUeLUDD0NGLoBg> Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez provided, which is that "we at CUNY are proud of our LGBTQ students, faculty and staff and of their contributions and advocacy in making the University a bastion of inclusivity and diversity. It is with renewed hope that we reaffirm our support for the LGBTQ community, and the ongoing struggle for full acceptance and equality."

Sincerely,

Mona Jha, Esq.
Chief Diversity Officer, Title IX Coordinator, and Section 504/ADA Coordinator
