Shelter-in-Place/Lockdown Drill in the 17 Lexington Avenue Building on Wednesday

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

On Wednesday, April 5, at 11 am, Baruch College's Department of Public Safety will conduct an emergency preparedness drill in the Field Building located at 17 Lexington Avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets to test the College's shelter-in-place/lockdown protocols.

17 Lex is equipped with a building-management system that allows Public Safety to centrally lock certain classrooms and offices that have card-swipe access. Offices and classrooms without the swipe-card system have locks. On Wednesday morning, Public Safety officers will test the protocols and the system. The first step will be an announcement about the drill over the public address system. Shortly afterward, Public Safety will initiate the lockdown process.

We ask that faculty, staff, and students cooperate so we can simulate an actual emergency during which Public Safety determines that the safest course of action is to direct building occupants to shelter-in-place. Examples of such incidents include an armed intruder, a riot, severe weather (such as a hurricane), or other type of dangerous situation outside of the building. During some of these incidents, Public Safety may also decide to initiate a lockdown protocol. Therefore, we will be testing both practices-shelter in place, and lockdown-during the drill. Building occupants on all floors except the first floor will be advised to shelter in place and initiate a lockdown protocol. For the purpose of this exercise, first-floor occupants will be directed to evacuate the building.

General Instructions

During this drill, building occupants will be asked to:

*        Listen for the announcement
*        Close all doors
* Turn off the lights and stand away from the doors
* If you are in a classroom or office with a card swipe, remain where you are and wait for Public Safety to lock the space centrally
* If you are in an office without a card swipe, lock the door
* If the classrooms are locked and you are in the hallway, evacuate using the nearest stairwell; if you are on the first floor, evacuate the building
*        Wait for further instructions

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience this drill may cause. We are committed to keeping the Baruch community safe.

Sincerely,

Katharine T. Cobb
Vice President for Administration and Finance
