Baruch State of the College 2010-20

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I hope this message finds you and your families managing well despite the ongoing challenges our society faces as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring term will go down in history as one of the most challenging ever; and as it draws to a close, I want to commend the entire Baruch community for your endurance, flexibility, and understanding as we have grappled with so many unforeseen changes and challenges.

Back when things were "normal," during the fall semester, I announced that I would be stepping down as president of Baruch College after 10 wonderful, challenging, and deeply fulfilling years. I began planning at that time to deliver a formal State of the College address in the Spring 2020 semester that would highlight the great progress that we have made across every area of the College. That address was to have been delivered before the College's General Faculty meeting in late March, and students and staff would have been welcome to attend.

However, as with Commencement and so many other end-of-the-year events, the General Faculty meeting was canceled, and my State of the College had to be entirely reimagined. I am now pleased to share with you the "virtual version" of my address, which now takes the form of brief, videotaped remarks<https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/president/remarks-writing.html> and a written State of the College Report<https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/president/messages/documents/BaruchCollege2020StateoftheCollegeReport.pdf> that highlights the College's accomplishments over the past 10 years and identifies some of the challenges that will need to be addressed under the leadership of my highly capable successor, Dr. S. David Wu.

I hope that you will take a few minutes to watch the video and read the report. I am beyond fortunate to have worked with an incredible group of administrators, faculty, staff, donors, and advisors whose dedicated efforts and creative vision have resulted in exciting new initiatives and enormous progress for our institution. They, along with our hardworking and highly motivated students, truly make Baruch College a special place and a force for positive change in the world.

I now look forward to celebrating our virtual Commencement experience with all of you on Monday, June 8. Afterwards, I shall take a brief research leave over the summer and then return to the College faculty as a CUNY University Professor, teaching two graduate courses in the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.

Let me also take this opportunity to wish all of our students the best of luck on finals this week!

Please stay safe and well.

Sincerely,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, PhD
President, Baruch College
(2010-2020)
