Respecting and Strengthening Our Culture of Diversity and Inclusion

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Last Thursday, I reaffirmed the College's commitment to Diversity, Equal Opportunity, and Affirmative Action. The focus of that message<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=BSO7WVq1LUGp4-3lBZL7gA&ref_id=SehxLQksmku1WbDJp86-aA>-and indeed, the long-standing culture at Baruch College-celebrates our vibrant and pluralistic community.

Within such an environment, it is essential that we immediately address instances of offensive speech, whether oral or written, and use such situations as an opportunity to promote inter-personal understanding and growth. The College is currently investigating allegations of offensive language (or innuendo) that was included in a video recently posted to the website of a student club. The Office of Student Life is reviewing the details of the posting and its impact on the students who watched it. Part of this process is intended to foster a healthy conversation and opportunity to reaffirm Baruch's commitment to a respectful, inclusive environment.

Further advancing our culture of respect, Baruch holds numerous events each month to showcase and celebrate our diverse and inclusive environment. Last week, for example, Baruch's Chief Diversity Officer Mona Jha, Esq., featured many such events surrounding Women's History Month in her monthly Diversity & Inclusion<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=DAbBxp4JNUKNKudabe487Q&ref_id=SehxLQksmku1WbDJp86-aA> newsletter. Next month, we will also host the Inaugural Robert C. Weaver Presidential Lecture that will focus on diversity and leadership. The lecture<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/default.aspx?page=uL4eCmp0yECuQO-wq_n5Rg&ref_id=SehxLQksmku1WbDJp86-aA> will honor Baruch's first president, Robert C. Weaver, who is also remembered as the first African American to be appointed to a U.S. cabinet-level position. Dr. Weaver served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1966 to 1968.

The Baruch College community not only respects but also welcomes and invites diversity of all types, including cultural, religious, gender, ethnic, and racial diversity. I call on everyone who works and studies at the College to demonstrate their support for this important common value.

Sincerely,

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, PhD
President, Baruch College
