Unveiling the Tapestry of Thought: My Blog Reorganized

It may be the first week of the spring semester—welcome and welcome back, everyone—but we are in the coldest part of the winter, with below-freezing overnight temperatures possible from now until the spring season, when more temperate weather begins. Therefore, we need to take precautions to safeguard our buildings from winter-related damage.

My December Blog: “On Tribalism—It May or May Not Be What You Think”

Dear Baruch Community,

The holiday season is upon us, and my thoughts drift to my family’s tradition of spending time together in the small Pennsylvania town we lived in for more than 30 years, where our children were born and raised. We have a fuller house these days with our grown children, their spouses, and our new grandchild. During this precious time, we gather with old friends and neighbors, exchanging holiday greetings and seasonal treats while our children visit with their childhood friends,

Newman Vertical Campus Floor Restoration

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

As the campus community prepares for the upcoming semester break, I wanted to provide a timely update on the ongoing terrazzo flooring replacement project taking place in the Newman Vertical Campus (NVC).

This project, which is managed by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), has progressed into an open circulation area of the NVC. To minimize the impact of construction in this high-traffic area, DASNY intends to complete most of the work by the end of December while building use is lower.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Central Tenets of the Baruch Experience

Dear Baruch Students, Faculty, and Staff,

My heart is heavy as I reach out to our community to reinforce central tenets of the Baruch experience: diversity, inclusion, and belonging. In recent days, two incidents of antisemitism have been reported that are under investigation. These incidents occurred both on our campus and in virtual environments; they are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. All Baruch students, faculty, and staff are entitled to learn, work, and thrive in an environment where they can be open about their identities

My November Blog: “Appreciate the Complexity Around Us”

Dear Baruch Community,

Since moving to New York City, I alternate my routes as I walk home from campus each evening simply to enjoy the varying aromas, music, markets, languages, and people of the city—even if just for a moment.

A Tale of Two Avenues
Along Lexington Avenue, ranks of small shops, spice stores, and ethnic restaurants always seem to be filled with patrons, while sidewalks are continuously populated by food couriers and their wares as I stride by. Bollywood pop leaps out from restaurants, sharing a foreign

Dear Baruch Community,

Earlier this month, I was interviewed by ABC News as part of their coverage of the upcoming Supreme Court case concerning affirmative action in college admissions. The reporter was most interested in how a selective institution like Baruch achieves a diverse student population when race is not a factor in admissions—such policy is consistent across all CUNY colleges. I will return to this topic in the blog post. The reporter was also interested to know the significance of my being the first Asian American

Building Community: Campus Facilities Update – 17 Lex Elevators

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

We regret that two of the six elevators in the Lawrence and Eris Field Building at 17 Lexington Avenue (17 Lex) are currently out of service. The Facilities Department is working continuously with our counterpart teams at CUNY and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, which oversees facilities operations for public buildings such as ours, to rectify the issue as quickly as possible.

Official Launch of Baruch’s Strategic Planning Process for 2023–28

Dear Baruch College Community:

It is my pleasure to launch the Strategic Planning Process for Baruch College. Every five years, Baruch renews its institutional strategic plan: the 2013–18 plan positioned the College as a global leader in public urban education, and the 2018–23 plan forged a comprehensive and ambitious blueprint to further that aim. We are continuing that tradition in launching an institutional strategic planning process for 2023–28.

Dear Baruch Community,

As spring arrives and the weather warms, I can feel every bit of change in the City’s pulse during my early morning runs—by the number of people out and about and even the expressions on their faces. As we enter the final stretch of the academic year and prepare for May Commencement, we also turn our thoughts to those who will soon join the class of 2026 and how we can serve them and the generations of students who will follow.

The Passing of Mildred Weissman

Dear Baruch Community,

<https://pmail.baruch.cuny.edu/PoliteMail/images/Mildred%20Weissman.JPG> I write to share the news that Mildred Weissman, who was among Baruch College’s most prominent benefactors, passed away on February 6 at the age of 102. Statement on Events of January 2022 and Support for the Baruch Community

Dear Baruch College Students and Colleagues,

January 2022 was a challenging month for all of us.

On January 9, 17 people, including 8 children, lost their lives in a terrible five-alarm fire at Twin Parks North West, a 19-story, high-rise apartment building in the Bronx. Many other residents and visitors were hurt in this terrible tragedy, including some who were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. We later learned that a CUNY student Sera Janneh, a Lehman College sophomore, died as a result of the fire. As

Hi,

Can you please explain to me what it means that our academic calendar says next week "classes follow a Friday schedule"? I don't understand what that means.

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy

Dear Baruch Community,

It is my honor to connect us all in celebrating the landmark life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday will be observed nationally on Monday. Dr. King’s name is synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, but today as much as then, his convictions, strength, and dreams provide wisdom and hope for the tumultuous time we are in as a nation.

My December Blog: “Find Your Own Reason for the Journey”

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I spent a good portion of last month holding a series of small, in-person meetings with more than 60 College senior staff. These free-flowing conversations covered a variety of topics—from pressing resource issues and challenges from the past year, to hopes and dreams for the future. These meetings gave me the opportunity to have direct communication with our staff and allowed me to listen and understand their concerns and aspirations. While I appreciate the efficiency of Zoom meetings, I realized from these
